Whats New Wednesday’s: Downtown Continues Cleanup Efforts In Skid Row, Third Annual LA Beer Crawl Kicks Off This Saturday and The Varnish Earns The 2012 Spirit Award for Best Cocktail Bar In The Nation!

Operation Healthy Streets, led by The Los Angeles Department of Public Works (DPW) and includes The Mayor’s Office, LAPD, LAFD, Department of Sanitation and other organizations, resumed its series of cleanup efforts in Downtown’s Skid Row this last Monday.  The current cleanup schedule will take place daily beginning at 8 a.m., from August 13 to August 17, and August 20 and 21.  This week-long “comprehensive cleaning” is part of a new maintenance plan for the area, which will include massive quarterly cleanings and smaller bi-weekly “touch-ups.” Included in this plan is the installation of 21 new, heavy-duty trash cans to the area.

The LA Craft Beer Crawl returns for its third annual celebration this Saturday, August 18 from 3-7pm.  Sample over 70 craft beers at seven top downtown bars including the Golden Gopher, Cana Rum Bar, Seven Grand, Casey’s Irish Pub, Cole’s, Las Perlas and Braodway Bar.

Tickets are available online and are priced at $54 per person for unlimited tastings ($10 if you are a designated driver) and $74 for early entrance. Tickets to the additional beer seminars will cost you $15 per person.

The 10th Anniversary Tales of the Cocktail culminated with the 2012 Spirited Awards, an awards ceremony hosted by the dynamic duo of Simon Ford and Zane Lamprey that recognized the best in the world in the cocktails and spirits industry. For the LA contingent, the highlight of the night was The Varnish winning at last for Best American Cocktail Bar, after being nominated in 2010 and 2011. The award recognizes a bar’s influence on U.S. cocktail trends, with judges taking menu, bar teams, atmosphere and cocktail quality into consideration.  Many Congrats!
