Midweek Bite: Water Grill

For the past 21 years, the Water Grill has specialized in fresh seafood, simply prepared. It may sound like a simplistic concept but trust us, there is nothing basic about this DTLA eatery–this is definitely some of the best in downtown dining.

The restaurant re-opened earlier this year after undergoing a facelift (it now boasts an open kitchen and a redesigned layout) as well as a menu overhaul from new Executive Chef Damon Gordon, and the results are delicious. Once seated in one of Water Grill’s comfy booths, patrons can choose from a nearly infinite list of fresh seasonal fare: iced shellfish platters, whole fish options and a raw bar share the bill with filet mignon, charcoal-grilled chicken and a variety of tasty appetizers. The dessert menu is similarly yummy, you might be hard-pressed to choose between the caramel bread pudding and the pear and dried cherry tarte tatin. Here’s a tip: come hungry!

Water Grill’s bar does not disappoint with an excellent wine list, a variety of beers on tap (available in 10/16 oz servings as well as pitchers) and even a vintage-inspired cocktail list. You can’t go wrong with a Dark and Stormy, but if you’re feeling especially adventurous, ask for the bartender’s special–it changes daily.

The spacious dining area and ample parking options make Water Grill ideal for group dining, but we’d suggest making a reservation if you’re going for dinner, especially during peak weekend days.

Water Grill is overpriced for what it is. Great food but service is lacking. Maybe I went when they were still fairly new in their reopening. Drinks took 15 min to arrive and food took over an hour. But as I said, food was great but if I’m paying 5 start prices, I want the whole experience as well.
